Three adjectives that describe Santiago are sensible, manly, lonely.
First, We can see that the reason why Santiago is sensible in page 13. He told Manoline that it is impossible to take Manoline in his boat. And often he told boy that boy should get on father's boat.
Second We can know that Santiago is manly in page 18-19. In this sentence there are description of Santiago's form. He looks still powerful in spite of his age. Also his thinking is manly because he still desire to get big fish.
Third we can see the old man's character, lonely in page 45. In this page he went to sea alone in order to get big fish. And he said aloud "I wish I had the boy,". And also in the living before he went to the sea, boy often came old man's house. He took in boy and never told boy go out.
Three adjectives that describe Manoline are friendly, diligent, mature.
First, Manoline is friendly because they have strong friendship in spite of the gap of age. It indicate Manoline don't care the age, and he can have friendship with other easily.
Second we can see the fact that Manoline is diligent through their living. Manoline often came to old man's house to make breakfast. Perhaps Manoline did't have to cook because he have own house and he can get breakfast. But he cooked at old man's house.
Third character of Manoline is mature. He sometimes notice that old man lie because of worried about boy's hardship. But boy pretend not to notice the old man's lie.
